Bill Bradley for President
In 2000 we will elect a new president. I think that should be Bill Bradley.Bradley is in the basketball hall of fame as a New York Knick. He won a championship with the Knicks in 1970 and 1973 and had his number 24 jersey retired by the Knicks.
He then spent 18 years as a U.S. Senator for New Jersey before retiring in 1996.
You might think that I am endorsing Bradley only because he is a former Knick. This is not true. I think he is extremely qualified for the position and I agree with many of his positions.
First of all, Bradley is an adamant proponent for equality and minority rights. To me, this is the most important issue this nation faces. Racism is still rampant and blacks and whites are from far being treated as equals as they should be. Bradley has made civil rights his most important issue. In this area he is ahead of Gore and far ahead of any Republican.
Bradley is also an honorable and trustworthy man. I believe him when he says that he will do all he can to improve race relations in this country.
The knock on Bradley from Republicans and Democrats alike is that he is too stiff and has not differentiated himself from Gore at all (like I said though, he has established a clear difference with his civil rights advocacy).
To the first charge I must say that although he comes off as a little stiff in front of a large crowd, in smaller less formal crowds he really shines. I had the honor of seeing Bradley speak to my Poli Sci class in 96. I was impressed with how charismatic he was. He seemed very comfortable. I came away with a new appreciation for him and ever since have been hoping that he will run for President. Now that he is I am very excited.
And so what if he's appears stiff in front of a large crowd? For the past year all any one says is that we don't need a President who is a smooth politician. Now that there is that option it's a drawback to not be so smooth.
I know that the election is almost a year and a half away but now is the time for Bradley to begin his run at Gore and the Executive Office. I hope that in January 2001 I will able to attend the innauguartion of President Bill Bradley.
